Greetings XML 2005 conference presenter or tutorial instructor. The following links will provide you with up to date information regarding your speaking or teaching engagement at XML 2005.
This page (and the rest of the conference web site) should give you all the information you need to make your presentation at XML 2005 a success.
I will be your event liaison, so please feel free to contact me directly at:
Marion Elledge, Conference Director
melledge@idealliance.org
+1 251 432-3766
The conference takes place November 14-18, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, at the Hilton Atlanta Hotel.
The call for participation is now open at the submission site. All submissions must be made via this web site; we cannot track email or phone submissions, nor pass them on to the reviewers for review and grading. Submissions need to include an abstract (up to 500 words), keywords and an estimate of the level of technical knowledge required of the attendee. We welcome submissions at all levels; many of the conference attendees are experts in their fields, while many are new to some areas of XML.
CONFERENCE SCHEMA & GUIDELINES:
As indicated in the letter of invitation, a presentation paper is REQUIRED. The Conference Schema & Guidelines and authoring tools are available.
PROCEEDINGS PAPER SUBMISSION DETAILS:
Individual Presentation Codes
Each presentation has been assigned a number or presentation code. This code must be used when submitting your Proceedings papers.
Keywords
A list of keywords has been provided to assist you when creating your Proceedings papers.
Authoring Tools to Help Create Proceedings PaperA number of customizations for various XML authoring tools have been provided to assist you when creating your Proceedings papers.
Online Proceedings Paper Submission/Validation Form
We have developed an online Proceedings paper submission/validation form. All presenters need to use this form when submitting their Proceedings papers. Deadline again for the Proceedings papers is September 16, 2005.
IDEAlliance's NONEXCLUSIVE PUBLICATION AGREEMENT & LICENSE:
Please sign and return IDEAlliance's Nonexclusive Publication Agreement & License - Policy 2003-23. The form must be faxed to 703-837-1072 - attention Dave Kunkel - by September 30, 2005. If you have any questions, please contact Marion Elledge at melledge@idealliance.org.
PRESENTATION SLIDES:
All presenters should forward a copy of their presentation slides directly to Dave Kunkel at dkunkel@idealliance.org. All slides will be made available for registered conference attendees online. Please submit your slides in one of the following formats:
Please zip your slides and send to dkunkel@idealliance.org, or email him with a URL from which he can easily pick up the slides. If you have any questions regarding your slides, please contact Dave Kunkel directly. All slides are due no later than November 18.
You may wish to consider creating the slideshow presentation in XML. There are a number of systems that various XML experts have put together, which are freely available, and may meet your needs as well as commercial non-XML-based systems. A (probably partial) list of such tools is to be found at http://www.mulberrytech.com/walkthewalk.html.
PRESENTATION TIPS:
A number of helpful presentation tips have been provided to assist you with your presentation.
REGISTRATION:
One primary presenter per presentation will receive a complimentary conference pass to attend November 15-17. IDEAlliance will be automatically registering those presenters and you will receive a confirmation email. Additional presenters will receive a 50% discount off the appropriate member/non member conference prices. Please note this does not apply to the academic rate or tutorials. Additional presenters must register directly using the online registration form when it becomes available.
HOTEL INFORMATION:
A special conference rate has been arranged at the conference hotel, with a reservation cut-off date of October 21, 2005. Please note that reservations after this date may not be possible and will be offered on a space availability basis. For more details please see the HOTEL/VENUE information page.
AUDIO VISUAL EQUIPMENT:
Each conference track room will include the following standard equipment: one computer projection unit, one screen and microphones. If using the computer projection unit, please remember that you are responsible for supplying the computer. Macintosh and Windows laptops with resolution 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x768 will automatically be supported. If you wish to use a different operating system or resolution, please let us know so we can make sure the AV company is prepared. Please update your audio visual information in the Submission Site.
PRESENTATION LOGISTICS:
The program is divided up into 6 tracks throughout the three days. Each session on any particular day is then divided up into two 45 minute talks (35 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A). Both presenters in a given session should be present 10 minutes before the start of that session regardless of who speaks first. (This is to allow for an audiovisual check and an easy transition between presenters.) In addition, we ask that the presenter who speaks first in a session remain present throughout the remainder of the second talk in that session.
All presentations will take place at the conference hotel, the Hilton Atlanta Hotel.
PUBLICITY:
We encourage all presenters to send out notices regarding their presentation to any relevant press or mailing lists. We have found it to be beneficial to both the presenter and the event. In addition, please consider the following:
Link your company's web site to the conference web site. Banner Ads are now available for this purpose.
Forward any related press releases/announcements to the event webmaster - Dave Kunkel - dkunkel@idealliance.org. We will load them on the event site.
Please use the string "XMLConf2005" in any folksonomy applications such as blogging.
We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta, GA!

Tutorial handouts are REQUIRED. All tutorial instructors are asked to provide a FULL tutorial handout for each of their respective tutorials. Please remember NOT to use dark background colors and to allow enough space for binding.
As a format for printing, we prefer PDF, set for letter-size paper, with embedded fonts and graphics. If PDF is not possible, please use one of 1) Power Point, 2) HTML (including all stylesheets), 3) SVG, or 4) StarOffice or OpenOffice Presentation. Please send your handouts in a zip file to Dave Kunkel at dkunkel@idealliance.org, or send him a URL where he can pick up the handouts easily. If you have any questions regarding your handouts, please contact Dave directly.
Note that if your handouts are not received by October 3rd, it will be your responsibility to duplicate, bind, and ship the handouts to the venue. IDEAlliance will not be able to duplicate handouts onsite.
All tutorial instructors will receive a complimentary conference pass to attend the conference November 15-17. IDEAlliance will be automatically registering tutorial instructors. Your official registration confirmation will be sent via email once you have been registered. Please note that this complimentary registration does not apply to tutorials other than your own tutorial. If you would like to attend an additional tutorial, please register for that additional tutorial directly with the online registration form when available.

Marion Elledge, Conference DirectorProduct pitches are not acceptable from the podium, except within the "Product Presentation Track". Product Presentations will be specifically highlighted to introduce a product or provide a product demo.
Stay on Track -- Attendees will be coming to see your talk based on the submitted abstract, and perhaps having seen the written paper. Please keep this in mind - and DO NOT change what you were originally scheduled to talk about.
Make sure your slides are readable from the back of the room. There is no limit to the number of slides you can use, so don't try to cram too much onto one.
Don't whisper. Even though you will have a microphone, please continue to speak loudly and clearly. This will help everyone understand what you say during your presentation. Also, remember not to speak too fast. Sometimes speaking just a little more slowly can make all the difference.
Be interested in what you're presenting. If you sound bored, your audience will be bored, no matter how thrilling the subject of the talk may be.
Explain all acronyms (well, maybe not "XML"). Some members of the audience may have never heard them before. You want to make sure everyone is clear about what you are discussing. This will help.
Try to anticipate questions and be prepared with answers. The session chair (except in tutorial rooms) will have questions, even if nobody else does! Don't be defensive with the answers; people are usually just trying to understand what you said and how you got there.
Another web site listing additional presentation tips:
The Conference schema is a subset of DocBook. All proceedings papers must validate against this DocBook subset to be accepted by the proceedings paper submission procedure. The processing that we do to the papers to create the HTML and PDF (and perhaps other versions) depends on the papers all conforming to this schema.
The conference schema is available in three schema languages: DTD, RELAX NG and W3C Schema. Should there be discrepancies between them (which are not expected), the DTD is the normative version. Please let us know of any discrepancies, or any bugs in the files.
There are three zip files which contain relevant files:
Images for inclusion in the proceedings paper must be in one of
the formats JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, or SVGZ. The rendered size of
the images must be smaller than 7" (17.5cm) wide by 9" (23cm) high,
or 600 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. The imagedata element allows three ways to size your images; please see the DocBook
documentation at imagedata for
details. Images that are larger than allowed may be sent back to the
author for resizing, automatically scaled down in size, or
clipped.
Papers should be at least 2000 words long. Longer papers are welcome; generally at least 2500 words are needed to adequately cover the subject matter. Each presentation will be assigned a number or presentation code. This code must be used when submitting your XML papers. We expect a number of authoring tool vendors to create customized tools and will post these as they become available.
The conference organizers are pleased to present this list of vendors who are making their authoring tools available for speakers to author proceedings according to the conference schema (a subset of DocBook, please see Conference Schema and Guidelines). We hope that you will take this opportunity to try out the tools and let the vendors know you appreciate their support. Please note that the conference organisers are not able to give you technical support for these tools; you will have to contact the tool providers for this.

Completed XML papers must be submitted via the presenter database by September 16, 2005 for inclusion in the our online proceedings site. A link to the proceedings paper submission/validation form can be found on the index page once you've logged in to the presenter database.
All submissions MUST be in XML in either Unicode or ASCII and validate according to the Conference Schema and Guidelines. The XML paper may not have a UTF-8 BOM (Byte Order Mark). The filename must end in .xml. For cross-platform compatibility, file names for the XML document and supporting images must be less than 31 characters long. They may contain only ASCII letters, digits, the underscore (_), and hyphen (-) characters. One period (.) is permitted as the separation character between the file type and the rest of the file name. In particular, spaces are not permitted in file names.
Images for inclusion in the proceedings paper must be in one of the formats BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, or SVGZ. The rendered size of the images must be smaller than 7" (17.5cm) wide by 9" (23cm) high, or 600 pixels wide by 800 pixels high. The imagedata element allows three ways to size your images; please see the DocBook documentation at imagedata for details. Images that are larger than allowed may be sent back to the author for resizing, automatically scaled down in size, or clipped.
Papers should be at least 2000 words long. Longer papers are welcome; generally at least 2500 words are needed to adequately cover the subject matter.
Once the paper has been submitted to the website, you will have the chance to preview an HTML rendering of your paper. If you wish to check the rendering before submitting, you can use the same stylesheets, available in the authoring tools page.
Each XML 2005 presentation has been assigned an individual presentation code. Presenters who are submitting papers for multiple presentations, please do not submit more than one paper under the same presentation code.
See presentation code list (by author last name).

Lammel, Ralf - Program Manager, Microsoft, U.S.A.,
U.S.A.
Since January 2005 I am Program Manager at Microsoft in Redmond in the WebData/XML
team. In previous years (1999-2004), I worked on the faculty of the Free University
Amsterdam, Computer Science Department, and at the Dutch Centre of Mathematics
and Computer Science: http://homepages.cwi.nl/~ralf/. I obtained a PhD ("dissertation")
in Computer Science from University of Rostock (Germany), in January 1999. In
the years 1990-1999, I worked as a freelancer in major business programming
projects, where I specialized in the design, the implementation, and the deployment
of code manipulation tools. My computer science interests cover programming languages
and automated software engineering. My specific fields of expertise include
grammarware engineering (http://www.cs.vu.nl/grammarware/), software transformation,
generic programming, software design, aspect-oriented programming, and software
re-engineering. I have published some 40 papers on these and other subjects.
I am a regular member of program committees for ACM and IEEE events, and I organize
such events. Check out the upcoming summer school on transformational and generative
techniques: http://www.di.uminho.pt/GTTSE2005.At a technical level, I am fascinated
by declarative programming, grammar-based methods, executable specification,
and automated source-code manipulation. My current pet topic is tool and language
support for enabling the evolution of structural knowledge in software (such
as grammar or schema knowledge), while advanced techniques for "coupled"
software transformation are used to that end. Likewise, I am looking into the
intriguing problem of "generic" software transformations; these transformations
would be reusable among very different languages.

Laskey, Kenneth - Lead Engineer, The MITRE Corporation,
USA
Ken Laskey began working on Web-based metadata cataloguing systems through a
DARPA research project during the late 1990s and began examining the use of
XML while the specification was still in draft form. He continued to investigate
the use of the Web as the backbone of a distributed catalog and the particular
challenge of converging and coordinating the diverse vocabularies of distributed
contributors of information. This led to an interest in service-oriented architecture
as a means to access distributed resources and effectively mediate between local
vocabularies. The use of semantics technology to facilitate workable solutions
is of particular interest because the local vocabularies often express specialized
information and the challenge is to both preserve and make effective use of
the subtleties and differences. Dr. Laskey is currently on the W3C Advisory
Board and a member of the SOA Reference Model TC. He is technical lead for the
Information Semantics group at MITRE and a prime contributor to the description
and analysis of mediation services for DoD's Net-Centric Core Enterprise Services
(NCES).
